Meet the Experts

George Cheney
George Cheney
Professor of Communication
University of Utah

George came to the University of Utah in 2002, after having taught at the universities of Illinois, Colorado and Montana. Since 1998, he has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Management Communication at The University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand.

In January 2006, George became the Director of Peace and Conflict Studies in the College of Humanities. In November 2006, he became the Director of the Barbara L. and Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy, centered in the College of Social and Behavioral Science.

George's teaching and research interests include identity and power in organizations, workplace democracy and workers' rights, quality of worklife, professional ethics, the transformation of the citizen to the consumer, alternatives to market globalization, dissent at work and in politics, and the rhetoric of war and peace.

George has lectured, taught or conducted research in Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, and Colombia, as well as New Zealand. He is currently developing partnerships with a variety of organizations in Utah and elsehere for student internships and field experiences.

George believes that good pedagogy should move us beyond the taken-for-granted, that sound research should illuminate and inspire, and that meaningful service should engage us in working for others to better the world.
